Our Full Story
Village Threads is a United States–based grassroots humanitarian effort dedicated to helping school-age girls in underserved African communities remain in school and pursue their education with dignity and confidence.
In many rural regions of Africa, girls face a serious barrier to education when they begin menstruation. Without access to basic menstrual hygiene supplies, many girls experience embarrassment, stigma, and practical challenges that prevent them from attending school. In some communities, as many as 80% of girls stop attending school when they begin their menstrual cycles.
Village Threads helps to address this problem by fabricating, and distributing reusable menstrual hygiene kits that allow girls to manage their cycles safely, privately, and sustainably.
The organization began as the initiative of a husband and wife who, through travel to several African countries, witnessed firsthand how the lack of menstrual hygiene resources was affecting girls’ education and future opportunities. Conversations with local leaders and community members revealed both the scope of the problem and practical solutions already being implemented locally.
What began as a small volunteer effort has grown into a network of more than 80 volunteers across five states. Participants include quilting groups, church groups, families, students, and civic organizations. The project has also received support from a local government‑sponsored workforce program serving individuals with disabilities.
Each Village Threads kit contains durable, reusable components including a base shield, twelve interchangeable reusable pads, wash cloth, soap, two pairs of underwear, a sealable waterproof sanitation bag, educational materials, and a colorful fabric drawstring carrying bag.
For 2026, the organization’s goal is to fabricate and transport 400 kits—representing more than 10,000 individual hand‑crafted components produced by volunteers or purchased in country.
The kits are personally transported to Africa by the founders, where distribution is coordinated with trusted local partners, community leaders, and non‑governmental organizations. Whenever possible, Village Threads works with established in‑country partners to ensure the kits reach girls who need them most.
